The One Creative Privilege Only Musicians Really Get 🎼

Updated: Aug 28

“Architects don’t get to enjoy the houses they design.”

You could feel the air go cold.

I was a second-year interior architecture student.

We were admiring Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater — that iconic house built over a waterfall.

In case it’s new to you, it’s this dreamy cascade of concrete, stone and nature:

Fallingwater by Frank Lloyd Wright: Modern house with stone and beige structures over a waterfall in a forest. Tall windows and lush greenery evoke tranquility.

Someone from the back said, “Imagine designing something like this… and living in it.”

And then, without even looking up, our lecturer said:

“Architects don’t get to live in houses of their own design.”

It landed like a brick.

And honestly?

It’s true.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working on some stunning projects.

One was the Harbiye Military Museum in Istanbul — home to the world’s oldest military band, 'Mehter Takımı'…

Another was the radio house of TRT, the national broadcasting company — which was especially delightful as a former radio host myself…

But here’s the thing:

I never got to experience the finished result.

We design. We render. We send it off...

But we don’t get to live in what we create.

And that’s why musicians have something truly rare.

Because music is one of the only art forms where you get to experience the magic as you make it.

The art you do get to live in.

That moment of goosebumps mid-phrase?

That energy surge in a rehearsal that catches you off guard?

That quiet grin you give yourself when a passage clicks?

You don’t have to wait.

You don’t need the stage, the applause, the recording.

You get to live in the house you’re building — in real time.

So do it :)

Play something just for you today.

Not to impress.

Not to rehearse.

Not to “nail it”…

Just to feel it. And savour it.

Because when the world tells you that you have to earn your joy, I want to remind you:

It’s your prerogative to enjoy it now.

With warmth and music,

Gökçe 💙
